The 2026–2027 VFW Youth Scholarship Programs give students in grades 6–12 an opportunity to share their thoughts, strengthen their communication skills, and potentially earn significant scholarship awards.
This year’s theme is:
“What a Veteran Taught Me About America.”
Patriot’s Pen – Grades 6–8
Students submit a 300–400 word written essay based on this year’s theme.
Open to students in grades 6–8
National award of up to $5,000
Provides students an opportunity to express what patriotism, America, and the lessons of our veterans mean to them
Voice of Democracy – Grades 9–12
Students prepare and record an original 3–5 minute audio essay based on the same theme.
Open to students in grades 9–12
More than $2 million in scholarships awarded nationally
National first-place scholarship of $35,000
